Richard Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ in Antwerp, the setting of the opera on 21 March 2027
The Musical Highlight
On 21 March 2027, you will experience Richard Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ as a concert performance at the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerp. The Opera Ballet Vlaanderen production is conducted by Stephan Zilias.
Few operas are as closely connected with Antwerp. Wagner sets the first act of ‘Lohengrin’ on a meadow on the banks of the Scheldt near Antwerp. By attending the performance at the Koningin Elisabethzaal, you will therefore experience the work in the very city Wagner himself chose as the setting for his opera.
Opera Ballet Vlaanderen presents the work in concert. In this form, the focus is entirely on the music. The orchestra, chorus and singers perform on the concert stage without a full theatrical production, sets or costumes.
Tenor Kyungho Kim sings Lohengrin, Clara Nadeshdin Elsa of Brabant, Ewa Vesin Ortrud and Michael Kupfer-Radecky Telramund.
The performance begins at 3.00 pm on Sunday, 21 March 2027 and lasts approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes, including two intervals.

This small B&B has just five rooms. Each room is inspired by a different musical theme: Blues, Jazz, Electronic, Glamrock and Icelandic Studio.
The rooms are individually designed and have a private bathroom with a shower or bath, depending on the room category.
Facilities include complimentary Wi-Fi, a small tea and coffee station and, in some rooms, a kitchenette.
Hotel August
Hotel August is located in the Groen Kwartier, a quiet neighbourhood of Antwerp. Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen transformed a former Augustinian convent into a contemporary boutique hotel, combining historic brick architecture with clean, modern design.
The Superior Room has a contemporary interior. Facilities include a minibar, safe, Wi-Fi, speaker and a bathroom with shower.
The layout may vary slightly from room to room, as no two rooms at Hotel August are exactly alike.
Hotel De Witte Lelie
Hotel De Witte Lelie is located in Antwerp’s historic centre. The hotel occupies three 16th-century townhouses. Behind its distinctive pink door is a highly individual boutique hotel with just eleven rooms.
The Classic Room has a separate sitting area and a bathroom with a combined bath and shower.
From here, Antwerp’s old town, the Grote Markt, the cathedral and numerous restaurants are all within easy walking distance.
Music Travel Hideaways Special
On a private guided walk, you will discover the connection between Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ and Antwerp.
The walk begins beside the Scheldt, where Wagner sets the first act of his opera. From Het Steen, you continue through historic Antwerp. Your guide will introduce you to the medieval city, Elsa of Brabant and the Swan Knight Lohengrin, and explain the role Antwerp and the Scheldt play in Wagner’s opera.
