Buenos Aires - Argentina
Buenos Aires – Teatro Colón, a vibrant centre of music and culture
Welcome to Argentina, to Buenos Aires, the city that epitomises the fusion of music and urban culture like no other.
In this modern South American metropolis, every step is accompanied by the passion of the tango.
Buenos Aires is not only the gateway to Argentina, but also a city that captivates travellers with its charm and, above all, its connection to music. At the heart of this city lies the famous Teatro Colón, one of the most magnificent opera houses in the world.
A visit to this opera house is a sensory experience.
In addition to the Teatro Colón, it is well worth exploring the city’s other special musical venues.
An architectural contrast is the Palacio Libertad, Centro Cultural Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, still known to many as the former Centro Cultural Kirchner. The cultural palace is located in the former main post office of Buenos Aires. Inside lies the large Sala Sinfónica La Ballena Azul, meaning ‘The Blue Whale’. This oval concert hall appears to float in the former sorting area of the post office building.
We also recommend the Usina del Arte in the La Boca district. An ‘usina’ is a former power station. The building has been converted into a cultural centre with concert halls and exhibition spaces.
But Buenos Aires has even more to offer: alongside the major venues, there is a mysterious side to tango that lies off the beaten track.
An insider tip for true tango enthusiasts is to visit a ‘milonga’ in the San Telmo or Palermo districts. There, in the charming atmosphere of smaller, authentic clubs, the Porteños – the residents of Buenos Aires – dance themselves, and you can experience the true soul of tango up close.
Jazz lovers will also find the Palermo district well worth a visit. The Borges 1975 Jazz Club is located right next to Plaza Serrano, a lively square. The venue combines a bookshop, a bar and, at the back, a jazz club.
Buenos Aires is also home to the city’s grand cafés. Café Tortoni on Avenida de Mayo is the city’s most famous historic coffee house and was founded in 1858. Somewhat more elegant and, for many, even more beautiful is Confitería La Ideal, a magnificent patisserie dating from 1912.
For a special evening after a concert or dinner, The Harrison in Palermo is the place to go. The entrance is via the sushi restaurant Nicky. Behind it lies a bar in the style of a speakeasy – a hidden bar, as was common during the American Prohibition era. Our special recommendation.

Then take the ferry across the Río de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay.
Set off from Buenos Aires in the morning, stroll through cobbled streets, admire the colonial houses, and return to the Argentine capital in the evening. The historic old town of Colonia del Sacramento is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a lovely, peaceful contrast to the energy of Buenos Aires.
Whether it’s an impressive opera performance at the Teatro Colón or a passionate tango evening in the Palermo district – Buenos Aires is a true paradise for music and culture enthusiasts. Let yourself be swept up by the energy of this city and look forward to an unforgettable musical journey.
