Opera trip to Lake Como: ‘Death in Venice’

The musical highlight

On 9 October 2026, you will attend a performance of Benjamin Britten’s opera ‘Death in Venice’ at the Teatro Sociale di Como.

Britten’s final opera is based on Thomas Mann’s novella ‘Death in Venice’.

The Teatro Sociale is presenting a new production directed by Rodula Gaitanou. Daniel Smith is the musical director.

The British tenor Toby Spence sings the role of Gustav von Aschenbach. Dominic Sedgwick voices Dionysus and several mysterious characters whom Aschenbach encounters in Venice. Danilo Pastore provides the voice of Apollo.

The Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali and the Coro OperaLombardia will perform. The opera will be performed in English with Italian surtitles.

Discover Como

The city of Como is lively and very elegant. Como Cathedral, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, is situated right next to the Teatro Sociale and is one of the city’s most important buildings.

A little tip for your stroll through Como: visit the Beretta Il Fornaio bakery in the centre and ask for La Nuvola. This soft, brioche-like pastry with apricot filling is a sweet speciality from Como and goes wonderfully with an espresso as a mid-morning treat.

Take the funicular to Brunate, above Como, and enjoy the sweeping views of the town, the lake and the mountains.
