From summer light to autumn glow
Concert dates & music festivals throughout the year
When I think back on this summer, I immediately picture festival dust on my shoes, music in my ears and that light feeling that only balmy summer nights can bring. A festival summer remains in your memory, even when the open-air stages have long since been dismantled.
And now? As the days grow shorter, a different mood (also in the calendar) sets in. Golden autumn has something of a festive concert opening about it: the start of the season and subdued lighting. Rich colours everywhere, and I am full of anticipation for the new great musical moments that will carry me through the colder months – and beyond.
In October, the first chamber music evenings, jazz nights and singer-songwriter concerts beckon, which can be perfectly combined with a weekend trip. November then brings that special intensity: fog outside, the warmth of music inside. And in December? We not only celebrate the festive season, but also festive concerts, from baroque music in magnificent churches to modern winter jazz events and unique concerts at the turn of the year.
It is a change of seasons that can also be felt musically. Where summer sounds like vastness and freedom, autumn sounds like depth, golden tones and nuances. And winter? It carries a clarity and tranquillity that we often only become aware of when it gets darker outside, making the music seem very special.
Secretly, I also assign instruments to the seasons that particularly characterise the music and mood:
Spring, here I think of the flute and the harp. It sounds light, airy, calls for a new beginning and fresh awakening.
Summer, the guitar and trumpet come to mind here in particular. The sound is radiant, energetic and creates a festival feeling.
Autumn, it sounds like the cello and saxophone. Warmth and depth resound, it sounds melancholic with golden tones.
Winter, who doesn't think of the violin and piano? Sometimes it sounds very clear, sometimes solemn and powerful, and sometimes solemn and melancholic.
With our new section ‘Inspiration - Concert Calendar’, we accompany you through the year with ideas, tips and the most beautiful destinations for very special musical moments. Feel free to check back regularly. It's worth browsing.
My playlist of the seasons
Of course, Vivaldi is a must on any playlist of the seasons, but there's so much more. I love these:
- Antonio Vivaldi – The Four Seasons
- Simon & Garfunkel – April Come She Will
- Arcade Fire – Month of May
- Frank Sinatra – Summer Wind
- Nat King Cole – Autumn Leaves
- Billie Holiday – Autumn in New York
- Sting – December
- Tori Amos – Winter
And that's just the beginning, because every season has its own melodies.
If you want to say goodbye to summer and welcome autumn, you'll find inspiration here for trips to concerts and festivals this autumn and winter, and of course for spring and next summer. Because one thing is certain: next summer is definitely coming.
It strikes me again and again: music knows no season, and yet it does. It is always there.
