Iceland - Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Total solar eclipse: Iceland Eclipse Festival from 12 to 15 August 2026

The musical highlight

From 12 to 15 August 2026, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula will host the Iceland Eclipse Festival, one of the most extraordinary music festivals in the world.

On 12 August 2026 at 5:47 p.m., Iceland will experience a total solar eclipse, a very rare natural spectacle. For over two minutes, day will turn into night as the sun and moon align perfectly.

The festival combines this cosmic event with a top-class programme of music, art, science and wellness. Over 150 international artists will take to the stage, including Icelandic singer-songwriter Emilíana Torrini and legendary Icelandic electro band GusGus.

In addition to the concerts, there will be talks with astronauts, scientists and visionaries, as well as wellness activities. The special timing of the solar eclipse also coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, so you may even see shooting stars during totality.

The venue in Hellissandur, at the foot of the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier, offers one of Iceland's most dramatic backdrops for this unique experience.

Discover the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is often referred to as ‘Iceland in miniature’ because it combines almost all of Iceland's landscapes in a small area: glaciers, volcanoes, black beaches, lava fields and picturesque fishing villages.

Hellissandur is located about 195 kilometres from Reykjavík.

From here, you can reach Snæfellsjökull National Park on foot. The mystical glacier inspired Jules Verne to write his novel

‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ and is considered one of Iceland's places of power.

In the surrounding area, it is worth taking trips to the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, the dramatic cliffs of Arnarstapi, the picturesque Ingjaldshólskirkja church or the black lava beaches at Djúpalónssandur. The compact size of the peninsula makes it easy to explore several highlights in one day.
