A garden that does not look like a concert hall. Subtropical plants, water features, terraces made of lava rock. And chamber music.

The Giardini La Mortella in Forio are among the most beautiful botanical gardens in Europe. They were laid out in 1956 by the Argentine-British pianist Lady Susana Walton together with her husband, the English composer Sir William Walton, who had made Ischia his home. What began as a private retreat grew over decades into an extraordinary garden with a beautiful view over the bay of Forio. Today, La Mortella is a garden, concert venue and monument all in one.

In the small concert hall, hidden among subtropical plants and lava rock, musicians selected from Italy's most renowned music academies, including the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, perform.

The 2026 concert season runs from 2 April to 1 November. Chamber concerts take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

In June, every Thursday at 9 p.m., there is a second musical highlight: the orchestra concerts at the Teatro Greco, an open-air theatre on a hillside overlooking the bay of Forio.

Discover Ischia

Make the white church of Santa Maria del Soccorso by the sea your first point of reference. The Castello Aragonese on a rocky cliff is well worth a visit. And if you want to see the island from a bird's eye view, hike up Monte Epomeo, the extinct volcano in the heart of Ischia, with views over the entire Gulf of Naples.

The villa combines a lodge house with an extraordinary botanical garden. The property is home to a large cactus collection and is also a charming, very personal aparthotel with a pool, thermal spring water, its own restaurant and a very nice bar lounge surrounded by greenery.

The studio at Villa Ravino is a small hideaway – more like a well-kept apartment surrounded by greenery than a classic hotel room. It has a sleeping area and an equipped kitchenette if you want to be independent between meals. The best thing about it is the terrace with access to the garden. The studio can be booked with or without breakfast.

How to get to the island

Ischia can be reached via Naples Airport. From the port of Naples, a ferry or hydrofoil will take you to Ischia Porto in around an hour and a half.
