Music trip to Oulu: European Capital of Culture 2026 in northern Finland

Oulu will be one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2026, making it the perfect opportunity for a break in Finland.

We have selected three special events for the autumn and winter.

In October, Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ will be performed in an unusual adaptation developed by the Spanish flamenco dancer and choreographer Israel Galván.

In November, ‘Beyond the Sky’ combines orchestral music with astrophotography and light art.

In early December, Wynton Marsalis will be coming to Oulu with the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra.

The musical highlight

“Carmen” with Israel Galván

1 October to 4 October 2026

Bizet’s “Carmen” will not be staged in Oulu as a traditional opera production. Flamenco dancer and choreographer Israel Galván deconstructs the well-known story and reassembles it through movement, song and orchestra.

Niina Keitel sings Carmen, whilst Timothy Richards plays Don José. Also featuring are the singer and guitarist Maria Marín, the male voice choir Huutajat and Oulu Sinfonia, conducted by Maria Itkonen.

‘Beyond the Sky’ and the Lumo Light Festival

19 November to 22 November 2026

It gets dark early in Oulu in November. The Lumo Light Festival turns this into four evenings of light art in the city centre and by the river.

The musical highlight of the trip is the world premiere of ‘Beyond the Sky’. Astrophotographs by Jukka-Pekka Metsävainio are combined with a new composition by Lauri Porra.

The performances will take place from 19 to 21 November at the Ouluhalli. The work, which lasts around 45 minutes,

forms part of the ten-day Lumo Art & Tech Festival. The Lumo Light Festival itself runs from 19 to 22 November and is free of charge.

Wynton Marsalis in Oulu

1 December to 4 December 2026

Wynton Marsalis is coming to Oulu on 2 December with the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra.

The ‘Big Band Holidays’ programme combines jazz with American Christmas music. Catherine Russell and Georgia Heers will be performing as vocalists.

The evening marks the conclusion of Finland’s jazz anniversary year. 2026 commemorates the 100th anniversary of jazz arriving in Finland.

Discover Oulu

Oulu is situated in northern Finland on the Gulf of Bothnia, the northern arm of the Baltic Sea, and, as the European Capital of Culture in 2026, will showcase a particularly diverse programme of music, art and events throughout the city.

My favourite spot for a stroll is Pikisaari, a small island just behind Kauppatori, the waterfront market square in the city centre.

On this small island, accessible via a footbridge, you’ll find old wooden houses, former workshops and studios. In the past, tar was processed here and ships were built. Today, Pikisaari is one of the city’s most interesting neighbourhoods.

Your travel option

This trip is ideal for 4 to 5 days in Oulu around the respective concert date.

If you have a little more time, we will plan an additional night for you. If you would like to combine Oulu with a second stop, Helsinki is ideal as a pre- or post-programme, as the Finnish capital is the hub for travel by plane or ship.

In Oulu, we have two accommodation options to choose from: Hotel Lasaretti on the River Oulujoki, or Lapland Hotels Oulu, centrally located next to the cathedral.

Hotel Lasaretti, Oulu

Hotel Lasaretti is located directly on the Oulujoki River, between Ainola Park and Hupisaaret City Park, and is about a 15-minute walk from the city centre.

Standard rooms offer views of the garden or river. Rooms are equipped with a desk and a television, among other amenities. A kettle and hairdryer are also provided. The bathroom features a rain shower. Breakfast buffet and Wi-Fi are included.

Lapland Hotels Oulu

Lapland Hotels Oulu is located in the centre of Oulu, right next to the cathedral.

The Mystique Deluxe Room is a modern room category, perfect for a long weekend. The room has a seating area, a desk, a coffee and tea station, a minibar, a safe and Wi-Fi. The bathroom is equipped to a high standard and includes a hairdryer.

Before or after the concert, the pool with saunas is a real bonus. Breakfast is included.
