‘Falstaff’ by Giuseppe Verdi Celebrating 130 Years of Teatro Massimo

16 May 2027

The Musical Highlight

On 16 May 2027, Teatro Massimo in Palermo celebrates its 130th anniversary with a new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera ‘Falstaff’.

Exactly 130 years earlier, on 16 May 1897, Teatro Massimo opened its doors with a performance of ‘Falstaff’ by Giuseppe Verdi.

To mark this historic anniversary, the opera returns to the stage of Italy’s largest opera house by building area.

The performance will be conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta.

Internationally acclaimed baritone Ambrogio Maestri takes the title role, a part for which he has been one of the most sought-after interpreters for many years. He is joined by Markus Werba as Ford, Roberta Mantegna as Alice and Desirée Rancatore as Nannetta.

Discover Palermo

Palermo is lively and full of history. Among its magnificent palaces, Baroque churches and colourful markets, you can discover the many cultural influences that have shaped Sicily’s capital over the centuries.

Take time to wander through the historic centre. Visit the Norman Palace and its famous Palatine Chapel, known as the Cappella Palatina, with its magnificent Byzantine mosaics, as well as Palermo Cathedral. Along the way, it is worth stopping at one of the traditional markets, where you can also discover the flavours of Sicilian cuisine.

Just a few kilometres outside Palermo lies Monreale. Its cathedral, renowned for its magnificent golden mosaics, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And if you fancy a day by the sea, Cefalù is an excellent choice. This small coastal town, with its winding streets, cathedral and long sandy beach, makes a lovely excursion along Sicily’s northern coast.
