Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Rio de Janeiro: a musical journey through the Theatro Municipal, Bossa Nova and Ipanema

In the South American metropolis of Rio de Janeiro, music is a constant companion in everyday life.

Samba, Bossa Nova, jazz and grand opera evenings are as much a part of the city as Ipanema, Sugarloaf Mountain and the green silhouette of the striking mountains.

Rio de Janeiro is the gateway to Brazil and, at the same time, a city that captivates travellers with its laid-back atmosphere,

its architecture and its deep connection to music. At the heart of the classical music scene is the famous Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil’s most important opera houses and concert venues.

An evening in this historic venue is a festive occasion and takes you right to the heart of Brazilian cultural history.

In addition to the Theatro Municipal, it is well worth checking out the city’s other special music venues.

For jazz lovers, the Blue Note Rio in Copacabana is an exciting spot. The club is situated right on Avenida Atlântica, Copacabana’s famous beachfront road, and is part of the renowned Blue Note jazz club chain from New York. Depending on the programme, you can enjoy jazz and Brazilian music, including bossa nova.

The Beco das Garrafas in Copacabana is also very special. Beco means alley. This small jazz club is considered the cradle of bossa nova.

We also recommend Santa Teresa, one of the city’s most charming neighbourhoods. Perched on the hills above the city centre,

Santa Teresa is known for its old villas, art studios, small restaurants and the historic tram.

Another must-see in Rio de Janeiro is Confeitaria Colombo in the historic centre. This magnificent café was founded in 1894 and offers a glimpse into the city’s elegant side. Tall mirrors, glass, wood, coffee, pastries and the feeling of a bygone era make this place a lovely break between sightseeing and a concert.

Nearby, the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura is also well worth a visit; it is one of the city’s most beautiful historic library buildings.

The magnificent reading room, with its tall bookshelves, dark wood and rich history, is one of Rio’s most impressive interiors.

For your stay, we particularly recommend Ipanema or the neighbouring Leblon. Ipanema has good restaurants and lovely little boutiques. Leblon is a bit quieter and is right next to Ipanema.

And in between? Then the large Havaianas store in Ipanema on Rua Garcia d’Ávila is well worth a visit. Havaianas are the famous Brazilian flip-flops. The store offers a huge selection spread over several floors.

Whether it’s a festive evening at the Theatro Municipal, a jazz concert at Blue Note Rio or a bossa nova night at Beco das Garrafas,

Rio de Janeiro is a wonderful destination for music lovers. Let yourself be swept away by the energy of this city and the Brazilian zest for life.
