Valletta - Malta

Malta Spring Festival 2026 at Teatru Manoel

from 7 April 2026

The musical highlight

From 7 to 11 April 2026, the Malta Spring Festival will take place in Valletta, with concerts at selected venues.

The focus is on chamber music and orchestral evenings, ideal for a short break in spring.

We offer you three concert evenings at the Teatru Manoel in Valletta.

The Teatru Manoel is Malta's national theatre and was opened in 1732. It is a small, historic building in the centre of Valletta that is still used today. It is precisely this blend of tradition and modernity that perfectly complements the festival's concert evenings.

The focus is on two chamber music evenings featuring works by Dmitri Shostakovich:

On 9 April 2026, you will hear Shostakovich's sonatas for cello and piano, for violin and piano, and for viola and piano.

The performers are Dmitry Sitkovetsky (violin), Alexandre Razera (viola), Adam Klocek (cello) and Debbie Shah (piano).

This will be followed on 10 April 2026 by an evening of piano quintets, featuring Grazyna Bacewicz's Piano Quintet No. 1 and Shostakovich's Piano Quintet. The Huberman String Quartet will perform with Christine Zerafa on piano.

As the closing concert on 11 April 2026, the Malta Spring Festival Academy Orchestra under Brian Schembri will perform a programme for strings, featuring Britten's Simple Symphony, Charles Camilleri's Kosmos Suite, Karl Fiorini's Weeping Woman and Ginastera's Concerto for Strings.

Discover Malta

Valletta, the smallest capital city in Europe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with grand palaces, narrow lanes and charming cafés.

The baroque Teatru Manoel is one of Europe’s oldest opera houses and offers a distinctive setting for concerts.

Stroll through Valletta’s narrow streets. The city is at its best in the early evening. A walk up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens is well worth it, with views over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities opposite, and you immediately see why Valletta was built as a fortified city.

Take the ferry or a water taxi across to the “Three Cities” – Birgu (Vittoriosa), Senglea and Cospicua on the other side of the harbour.

It is noticeably quieter there than in Valletta.

If you do not feel like heading back to your hotel straight after the concert, go to Strait Street. You will find small bars and a few live-music spots. And a little tip: sit on the steps outside Bridge Bar near St Lucia Street. Musicians often play here in the evenings. It is ideal for a final drink before strolling back to your hotel.
