Bothmer Castle is located in the Klützer Winkel region, between Lübeck Bay and Wismar Bay. The Baroque complex was built based on Dutch and English models and is now one of the most beautiful concert venues in northern Germany.
Every summer, the castle grounds open their doors for one of the most popular open-air concerts of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, and that is exactly where this short trip will take you.
Klütz is only about 20 kilometres from Wismar. You can also make the half-hour journey in comfort on an organised festival bus.
The musical highlight
5 July 2026, 3 p.m. Spread out your picnic blanket and let your gaze wander over the palace grounds. Experience the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and pianist Mao Fujita under the baton of Kent Nagano.

BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37
DVOŘÁK: Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 ‘From the New World’
Admission is from 1:00 p.m. On this afternoon, the spacious park will be transformed into a large open-air stage.
Picnics on the lawn are just as much a part of the experience as the concert in front of the castle façade.
Discover Wismar
Stroll across the market square, one of the largest and most beautiful medieval market squares in northern Germany, past the historic 16th-century water feature, which is still considered the city's landmark today. The alleys of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town invite you to explore: brick Gothic architecture, warehouses and small cafés alternate.
At the Old Harbour, the city opens up to the water. Historic sailing ships are moored here, and on calm days you can smell the Baltic Sea.
A walk along the harbour promenade is as much a part of Wismar as a cup of tea in one of the small shops by the water. If you feel like it, take the passenger ship to the island of Poel with its fine sandy beaches and small fishing villages, only an hour away.
